I love sweet stuff!!! And who doesn’t? If you are one of the few who don’t like sweets, you probably read Proverbs 25 and knew the danger of overindulging in sweets. I totally must have overlooked this chapter for years. Specifically, Proverbs 25:16, 27 in the English Standard Version (ESV). It reads:
Proverbs 25:16 If you have found honey, eat only enough for you,
lest you have your fill of it and vomit it.
Proverbs 25: 27 It is not good to eat much honey,
nor is it glorious to seek one’s own glory.
Honey is pure sweetness! I love honey in my tea, and the more of it, the sweeter it is. I am not drinking the tea but the honey. Reading these scriptures revealed to me that people were overindulging in sugar even in King Solomon’s day. Yes, sugar!
Eat as much as I need? When I am upset, I want sugar. When I am excited, I want sugar. When I celebrate, I want sugar. Okay, I always wish to have some sugar! So this tells me that something is amiss.
Now, we have sugar in everything. Read your food and drink labels. Sugar is addictive. Sugar has all sorts of names: corn syrup, brown rice syrup, dextrose, fructose, maltose. You get the idea. Search Google. Sugar is hiding everywhere.
The American Heart Association says we should limit our[1] added sugar to 9 teaspoons (36 grams) per day for men and six (6) teaspoons (25 grams) per day for women. I found this information by doing a Google search. The average person consumes almost 3 pounds or 6 cups of sugar in a week. WOW!
Honey is good, and we should enjoy it. We just need to control how much we eat, or we will be overfilled and have unpleasant consequences. For me, it is weight gain.
My husband’s men group says, “You can control your actions, but you cannot control your consequences.” I’m still learning to control my eating habits. How about you?
Let’s focus on reading our food and drink labels and see what and how we can start eliminating some sweets! It is going to take focus and perseverance!
Lord, I want all that I do to glorify You and not seek glory for myself. When I overindulge, I am doing it for my benefit and not recognizing that my body is the temple of Your Spirit! AMEN
Readers, I am praying for your strength!
Until the next time, blessings!
